Class is in Session
Edmonton, AB - It was a winning afternoon all around as the Edmonton Oil Kings pulled out a 3-1 win over the visiting Kootenay Ice on Tuesday afternoon at Rexall Place. A crowd of 8850 including over 5000 young Edmonton area students took part in the third Annual CN Hockey Hooky. The annual event which provides educational curriculum along with a one of a kind hockey experience for young people has now btought over 16000 kids through the doors of Rexall Place in the past three seasons.
Ironically, it would be Sam Reinhart, one of two Reinhart brothers playing for the Ice who would open the scoring on the power play in the first period. Despite falling behind 1-0 after the first the Oil Kings would push back in the second. NHL Top prospect Griffin Reinhart, Sam and Max's brother, drove hard to the front of the net and made a nice tip of a feed from Michael St. Croix to roof his 12th of the season. Reinhart would go on to a two point night with the goal and an assist and continues to shine on the Oil Kings blue line.
St. Croix, the Oil Kings scoring leader would then notch his team leading 34th of the season on a 4 on 3 power play in the third. St.Croix's eventual game winner as well as an assist brought his season total to 82 points. He currently sits fifth in the WHL scoring race with 19 games remaining. Rhett Rachinski would score his 17th of the season into an empty net to make it a 3-1 final. Laurent Brossoit came up with big saves when called upon and finished with 26 saves as the Kings out shot the Ice 35-27. Brossoit is currently third in the WHL with 30 wins as he continues his club record breaking season.
Edmonton's impressive home record moves to 23-4-1-1 while their overall record goes to 35-12-2-4 for a total of 76 points. The Oil Kings retain top spot in the Eastern Conference by six points over the Moose Jaw Warriors and are now just two points shy of the WHL leading Kamloops Blazers in the race for the Scotty Munro Memorial Trophy.
