Swift Current, SK – The Edmonton Oil Kings earned their first victory on their extended rodeo road trip by busting the Broncos in Swift Current 2-1. Oil Kings rookie Luke Bertolucci notched his first of the season and Edmonton’s leading scorer Michael St. Croix scored the game winner at 8:17 of the third period in the come-from-behind win. Edmonton’s penalty killing was the story, killing off all seven of the Broncos powerplays, while Oil Kings netminder Laurent Brossoit shut the door with multiple highlight-reel stops and finished with 27 saves to be named the game’s first star.
Swift Current carried a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes of play. Levi Bews tipped in a shot from in tight to give the home team the early lead. The Oil Kings evened things up in the second period after killing off a wave of Broncos powerplays. Bertolucci scored his first career WHL goal just past the midway point of the hockey game. Henrik Samuelsson ripped a drive on an Oil Kings rush and Bertolucci fought off a check while driving hard to the net and was able to chip in the rebound past Broncos netminder Eetu Laurikainen.
The Oil Kings were assessed 11 minor penalties, with most of them coming in the second period. Their patience paid off in the third when the Broncos turned the puck over to the Oil Kings top scoring line. It was a tic-tac-toe play that resulted in Michael St. Croix’s team-leading 11th goal of the season, and it was also the Winnipeg native’s third game-winner this year.
The Oil Kings record improves to 10-4-1-2, putting them in a tie for first place in the Central Division with the Calgary Hitmen. Edmonton’s six-game road trip will shift to B.C. for four games in five nights next week. The Oil Kings will play in Kamloops Tuesday, Kelowna Wednesday and then wrap up with back-to-back games Friday and Saturday in Prince George.
The Oil Kings will return to home ice at Rexall Place on Saturday, Nov. 17 as they host the Raiders for their third meeting of the 2012-13 season. Back by popular demand, the Oil Kings will once again give away 1,000 WHL Championship replica rings. All fans at the game will be eligible to receive a ring, since scratch-and-win tickets will be used to determine the winners.
