Edmonton, AB – The Oil Kings posted three unanswered third period goals in a thrilling 5-3 come from behind victory over the visiting Kelowna Rockets on Saturday night. Dylan Wruck brought the crowd of 6075 to its feet with a highlight reel game winner and Michael St.Croix became the first Oil Kings player in the modern era to post 100 career WHL goals. With the win the Oil Kings record moves to 8-3-1-2 as they continue to battle with Calgary for top spot in the Central division.
The Kings fell behind early as Kelowna’s Dylen McKinlay was able to capitalize on a breakdown in the Kings zone to open the scoring. Edmonton would even the score on the power play with about three minutes left in the first. Henrik Samuelsson was on the end of a tic tac toe passing play from TJ Foster and Michael St.Croix. Samuelsson slammed home a pretty pass that St.Croix managed to thread through the slot for his seventh goal of the season. Foster would finish the night with three assists as the Edmonton power play was a solid 2 for 6 on the night. The number one penalty kill in the WHL was also a perfect 4 for 4. The Rockets would regain the lead just before the break as Zach Franko tallied on a breakaway to make it a 2-1 game going into the second.
The Oil Kings would then strike first in the second frame as St.Croix roofed a shot from down low for his 100th career WHL goal. The power play marker tied the game and was assisted by Foster who notched his 200th career WHL point with the helper. Kelowna battled back and regained the one goal lead just past the midway point of the period with a goal from Tyson Baillie.
In the final period, Klarc Wilson tied the game 3-3 with his second of the season. Wilson capitalized on a great feed from Mitch Moroz who made a big individual effort to draw the defense and work the puck out from behind the net. Minutes later Wruck tallied his candidate for the WHL plays of the week. The veteran picked a cross ice pass out of the air, made a great toe drag to beat his defender on a 1 on 1 and finished it with a top corner shot to give the home side their first lead of the game. Samuelsson would then add his second of the game on an open net for the insurance marker as the Kings took their third straight win.
