Oil Kings Fall 5-4 In Shootout
Cranbrook, BC - The Oil Kings survived a wild third period but fell short in a 5-4 shootout loss to the Kootenay Ice on Wednesday. Despite a pair of goals from Dylan Wruck Edmon, ton's record dropped to 16-5-2-3 on the season. The single point earned in the loss tied the Oil Kings with the Calgary Hitmen for first in the Central division.
Wruck opened the scoring with a one timer from the point for the game's only first period goal. The power play marker came on the Oil Kings first man advantage of the game with under four minutes to play in the period. Edmonton's power play remained number one in the WHL going 1 for 2 on the night.
Kootenay answered early in the second period as Jon Martin tallied the equalizer on goaltender Laurent Brossoit just three minutes in. But the visitors would re-take the lead 35 seconds later as Keegan Lowe notched his fifth of the season. The goal extended Lowe's current goal scoring streak to three games. Wruck then added his second of the game just past the midway point of the period with a wicked backhand to make it a 3-1 Oil Kings lead.
Goaltender Mackenzie Skapski checked into the game for the Ice in the third, sparking the Kootenay offense. Griffin's brother Sam Reinhart scored for the Ice four minutes into the period to pull Kootenay to within one. Edmonton answered quickly as Mitch Moroz was able to pick a puck out of mid air for what appeared to be a 4-2 marker. But the goal would be disallowed after review for a high stick.
Kootenay's Luke Philp came up big for the Ice as he tallied a pair of goals less than two minutes apart to make it a 4-3 game with seven minutes to play. Oil Kings sophomore Cole Benson then tied the game with under five minutes left in the game. Benson picked up a loose puck in the slot and wired a wrist shot top shelf to tie things 4-4 with 4:39 remaining and salvage the single point.
The Kings were unable to tally in a lopsided overtime period before goals from Reinhart and Philp won the three round shootout for the home side.
