Edmonton, AB - The Oil Kings will look to avenge their 5-4 shootout loss on Wednesday as they host the second part of a home-and-home against the Kootenay Ice tonight at Rexall Place. The Kings gave up a 3-1 third period lead on Wednesday but salvaged the single point with a late goal from Cole Benson.
In 2012-13 the Oil Kings have a 1-1-0-1 record vs the Ice. After a 5-1 win on opening night in Edmonton the Kings fell 1-0 in Cranbrook on Oct. 14th and athe aforementioned 5-4 shootout loss on Wednesday. After meeting six times in the 2011-12 Regular Season - the Oil Kings won the season series over the Ice with a 6-0-0-0 record. Edmonton would then take a 4-0 series sweep over the 2011 WHL Champions in the first round of the 2012 WHL Playoffs. The series victory was the Oil Kings first in the modern era of the franchise and the first time since 1973 the Oil kings advanced past the opening round. Edmonton dominated play in that series as they outscored the Ice 16-7 and outshot the defending champs 137-95 for the series.
Oil Kings forward Michael St. Croix leads the Oil Kings scoring race with 35 points (14G, 21A) – this is 11th in WHL scoring. St.Croix has totalled 105 goals and 157 assists in his Oil Kings career (both Oil Kings career records). Dylan Wruck has returned from an upper body injury that sidelined him during last year’s playoff run. The native of Saskatoon, SK has scored nine goals and 21 assists in 22 games since his return and is 19th in WHL scoring.
Edmonton has the best power play (26.9%) and the best penalty kill (92.7%) in the league. St.Croix leads the team with 8 power-play goals (2nd in the WHL) while Wruck is 3rd in the WHL with 13 power-play assists. The Kings lethal number one ranked penalty kill has only allowed one power play goal against in their last 46 opportunities.
