Cranbrook, AB - The Oil Kings were derailed en route to their fifth straight victory as they suffered a 2-1 loss to the Kootenay Ice on Tuesday. Edmonton's record dropped to 27-9-2-3 on the season as they fell to second in the WHL Central division standings.
Edmonton opened the scoring for the fifth straight game as 20 year old T.J. Foster notched his 19th of the season. The native of Slave Lake is the Oil Kings all-time leader in career WHL games played with 309. He now has 230 career points and is tied for 18th in WHL scoring this season with 48 points. The goal came 6:55 into the game and would stand as the only goal of the first period.
The Oil Kings had some great opportunities to extend their lead in the second but could not beat Kootenay goaltender Mackenzie Skapski. The home side would make them pay for it as they fought back to tie the game with less than two minutes to play in the period. Goaltender Laurent Brossoit made a great save on an Ice breakaway but was beat on a shot from Jaedon Descheneau.
Edmonton started the third period killing a penalty before a delay of game call made it a 5 on 3 power play for the Ice for 1:20. A point shot from Joey Leach found its way through traffic as the Edmonton penalty kill gave up its first power play goal against in their opponent's last 22 opportunities. Despite a late push and some huge saves from Brossoit the Oil Kings were unable to find an equalizer.
The loss ended the Oil Kings winning streak at four and marked the team's first loss in 2013. Brossoit continued his stellar play with 30 saves in a losing cause. He now holds a record of 17-5-2-3 on the year and has not allowed more than two goals in a game in over a month.
