Rookie Camp Wrap Up

Edmonton, AB - The future looks bright for the Edmonton Oil Kings as 83 young prospects demonstrated this weekend in Fort Saskatchewan. Oil Kings Rookie Camp wrapped up from the Jubilee Rec Centre with Team Red taking a 4-2 win over Team Black to capture the 2012 Dougie Cup. The Dougie Cup is awarded to the winners of the Oil Kings Rookie Tourney and is named after long time Oil Kings fan Dougie Gaunt. Gaunt is the keeper of the cup and was on hand to present the trophy to Team Red Captains Dysin Mayo, Riley Simpson and Andrew Koep.   

Team Red took the early lead with a goal from the newly signed Bantam draft pick Koep. Team Black would respond late in the first as Cole Richardson hammered home a shot from the slot with 1 second remaining in the period. Ryan VanGenderen tallied off a nice play from Koep for the only goal of the second period as the Reds took a 2-1 lead going into the third. A wild third period saw Black even things up early off a goal from Ryan Kennedy. But Red would not be deined as they pushed right back with VanGenderen's second goal of the game and an insurence marker from Ryan Stronski.

The defending WHL Champions will now begin the difficult process of whittling down their remaining players to a preseason roster. Oil Kings Main Camp on-ice sessions begin on Monday, August 27th in Fort Saskatchewan and will include nearly all of the Oil Kings 20 returning players from the 2012 WHL Championship team. Joining them on the ice will be 26 players brought forward from Rookie Camp. In total, the Oil Kings will enter Main Camp with a group of 64 prospects.Main camp concludes on the evening of Wednesday, August 29th with the Oil Kings Annual Red-White Intrasquad game. Fans are encouraged to attend all of the Oil Kings on-ice sessions in Fort Saskatchewan. Rosters will be made available on site at the Jubilee Rec Centre.
