Cranbrook, BC- The Oil Kings were back on the ice Saturday night to take on the Kootenay Ice, and were looking for a win to close out the season. They also had a fresh face between the pipes, as 16-year old Laurent Brossoit made his first WHL start for the Oil Kings, and looked strong early on despite facing 22 shots in the first period alone. The only blemish in the first period was an even strength goal by Ice forward James Martin, who found the back of the next 5:22 into the first. Later in the first, the Oil Kings got into some penalty trouble, with Tyler Hlookoff and Braeden Laroque both sitting in the box, the Ice enjoyed a 5 on 3 but the young Brossoit kept the Oil Kings in the game.
The second period saw Edmonton square things up off a Sebastian Svendsen tip in. But seven minutes later, the Ice took the lead again when Kevin King ripped his 28th goal of the season past Brossoit, off an Oil Kings turnover making it 2-1.
The Oil Kings had a chance to even things up to close out the 2nd period, but instead ended up giving up two odd man rushes to the home team, and once again rookie Brossoit kept the Oil Kings in the game.
The Oil Kings were unable to add anything in the third period, despite late period pressure with the extra attacker. When it was all said and done, Brossoit turned away an impressive 49 shots in his start for the Oil Kings. This was the final game for 20-year olds Drew Nichol, Torrie Jung and newcomer Gary Nunn.
With the win, Kootenay clinched 4th place and home ice for the first round of the WHL playoffs.
